Do you need an inspection to renew your New York registration?
Yes. According to the New York DMV, you can't renew a vehicle registration if there's no record of the vehicle being inspected within the past 12 months. A current inspection is one of the standard requirements for renewal, along with a current address on file and insurance the DMV can verify.
If your inspection is still current, it shouldn't stand in the way of your renewal. If it has lapsed, getting the vehicle inspected is usually the first step.

What inspections does New York require?
New York-registered vehicles generally require an annual safety inspection. The safety inspection covers items such as brakes, lights, steering, and tires.
Most vehicles also require an emissions inspection, which is usually done at the same time as the safety inspection. Both are performed at licensed New York inspection stations.
Does every vehicle need an emissions inspection?
No. Emissions requirements can vary by vehicle type, model year, fuel type, and other factors. Does getting an inspection renew my registration?
No. Completing an inspection doesn't renew your registration on its own. Once the inspection is done, you still need to complete the registration renewal.
What if my inspection is expired?
If your inspection has expired, you'll generally need to complete the required inspection before your registration renewal can proceed. Take the vehicle to a licensed New York inspection station. Once the required inspection is completed and reflected in DMV records, you can continue with your renewal.

What if my registration has already expired too?

If your registration has been expired for more than one year, it can't simply be renewed. The vehicle will need to be re-registered at a DMV office or by mail.
